First up, a little history. We started Ethikl in 2010 after finding that, no matter how hard we tried we couldn’t buy anything in the shops and be confident it hadn’t been made by a child or some poor worker being ripped off in a developing country or wasn’t filled with harmful chemicals. Combined with this we have always been fascinated by markets. They are a kaleidoscope of entertainment, community, and commerce.
We live in a throwaway society where a dizzying array of products are available. We are constantly being told to buy, buy, buy! Yet every item we purchase requires both natural and human resources to manufacture, package and transport. We all love a bargain, but when you are paying only $5 for a t-shirt, maybe it's time to ask some questions.
I have made it my life’s mission to become a more ethical consumer I believe the everyday choices individuals make have the power to transform our world. The Ethikl Marketplace is made up of small, independent artisans who produce high quality, ethical products that have a positive impact on people and the planet. We want to help you, the ethical consumer, find anything from fair-trade products, to organic food, handmade clothes, unique gifts and natural beauty products.
I started Ethikl to do good, not to make people buy things they don’t need. Being an ethical consumer is not about satisfying immediate wants; it’s about considering the wider implications of our purchases. We need to create a new way of buying and reconnect with the lost art of making things by hand and using natural products in an earth friendly way. By consuming less and choosing products that are not harming people or the environment, we can make a big difference with our dollar. As well as knowing that you are purchasing products that are healthy you also have the satisfaction of helping local producers and being eco-friendly. (As well as knowing that you are purchasing products that are healthy and eco-friendly you also have the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting local producers)
