The Eco-baby Nest is the next best thing after your loving arms. The cradling effect of the baby nest provides a snug and secure place for your baby to sleep when he or she can’t be in your arms. The gentle movement created by the spring action resembles the movements inside the womb and makes it a natural transition from the womb to the outside world. It is especially soothing for restless babies, and helps relieve the symptoms of colic. The stirring of your baby will activate the spring and make waking up a slow and pleasurable experience, often lulling your baby back to sleep. The Eco-baby Nest ensures that your baby stays on their back, which is the preferred sleeping position to limit the risk of SIDS. It also decreases the pressure on the baby’s head, as there is no hard flat surface and the baby’s weight is distributed evenly, decreasing the risk of flat spots.
The Eco-baby Nest makes a perfect day-bed for co-sleeping parents who does not want to spend money on a bassinette and/or cot. The Eco-baby Nest can be hung from a hook attached to a doorframe or ceiling beam/joist. With multiple hanging options in the house your baby can easily be with you wherever you are. It is also the perfect outdoor bed for a day in the yard or at the picnic or camping, as all you need is a secure fixing point (e.g. a large branch) to mount the Eco-baby Nest.
Features
The material is 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton jersey. The natural undyed fibre ensures your baby sleeps in a pure environment with minimal chemical exposure. Hemp is cool in summer and warm in winter and very durable. Wash using half as much detergent as normally.
The spacer is made of hardwood for strength, and treated with linseed oil for durability. It comes with comprehensive hanging instructions.
The double-layered sleeping surface is open in one end and has a layer of 100% Australian felted (undyed) wool inside, which helps draw moisture away. The felt can be removed for separate cleaning/ airing/ drying. A bassinette sized lambskin (optional extra) directly under your baby will provide extra comfort and help to further draw excess moisture away. A folded blanket or similar can be inserted to make a thicker mattress. Extra layers can also be added to raise the head end further for babies with reflux.
Safety precautions
It is not recommended to add extra layers of material and blankets directly under your baby as there is a risk of covering the baby’s head. For the same reason it is recommended to use sleeping bags or extra clothes instead of blankets to keep the baby warm. Also, bigger sheepskin, such as natural shaped skins, is not suitable, as the cradling walls of the baby nest may result in parts of the skin covering the baby’s head.
The Eco-baby Nest is suitable for babies from newborn to approximately 6-9 months, depending on the size and development of the individual baby. There is a closing mechanism for the foot end, a flap which can be either stored away in the double-layered sleeping surface or add a fourth 'wall' using buttons, as shown in several of the pictures. It is however important to note that although closing this flap may slow down a baby who developmentally may be able to get out of the Eco-baby Nest, it is not a 'safety gate' as such. Therefore the Nest should not be used without vigilant supervision, and special consideration taken when baby have recently made developmental progress, e.g. shown signs of being able to roll over, sit up, crawl etc. Please also take special care if other young children or pets can access the Nest.
"The essence of it all is movement. Babies like to move and be moved. They like to explore a variety of movements of different kinds and tempo, and in this way they tone their muscles and increase their neuro-muscular co-ordination. Movement is integral to all this action. Babies seem to be striving for movement....Vertical, rather than side to side rocking is likely to be especially effective and resembles the up and down movement the baby felt when rocked inside the mother's pelvis before birth....Some women find that a vertical rocker suspended from a specially designed spring to maintain the rocking at this speed helps babies relax and sleep"
