Hi Melanie, Can you tell us a little about yourself and your driving beliefs?
I find peace and clarity by feeling that I am part of the solution rather that part of the problem. Learning more about the ways in which I can make a positive difference has led me down a path I didn't know I was going to wander. A most interesting, eye-opening and wonderful journey where I am in the company of so many amazingly talented and creative people, a constant source of inspiration and hope.

Being able to spread the word about the work of SurfAid International & the East African Mission Orphanage and the wonderful work they do is important to me. They are saving lives, raising and educating orphan children and families to give them the very best life they can have full of love, hope and the support they deserve. Having their information on the back of my cards helps to raise awareness for them and their work, that is an integral part of my business, raising awareness and helping to support causes that are making the world a better place.

I am driven by the endless and creative possibilities to explore ways and means to spread hope, love and encouragement in this world. To be able to do that is a privilege in a world where so many suffer for basic human rights.

I wish we could go back to the 70's and knowing what we know about the state of the world and the negative impact the human species have had, begin again, making wiser choices that create a more balanced life that enables the world, the people, wildlife and environment to BE in harmony. A world that see's the declaration of human rights upheld and adheared to EVERYWHERE. Where nobody has to plead for the most basic of human rights.

What do you make and what materials do you use?

I design and hand make greeting cards that don't cost the earth. Tree free greeting cards made from Hemp and Elephant Poo and 100% Post Consumer Recycled card. I am an artist, water colours are my first love. I also work with ink and acrylics.

I have just started to fiddle around with adding colour in photoshop but must say I am old fashioned at heart and love to create by hand first and foremost. I am an artist & illustrator, I have had several exhibitions and plan to have more this coming year. I have illustrated a book on climate change for kids for  www.1millionwomen.com.au and hope to see that out this coming year. I love to print on Hemp and Elephant Poo cards as well as other recycled papers available. I am looking forward to creating a full series of artworks on hemp canvas one of these days.

To what degree does a commitment to the environment influence your process as an artist?

It is the foundation and inspiration upon which it is built . I am a proud member of Design Can Change. At the same time I discovered that I wanted to make a living following my creative pursuits I also discovered that there were important choices that would determine whether I would become part of the solution or part of the problem. Awareness of environmental issues and concerns provides me with an array of questions...Whether or not it is environmentally friendly and sustainable practice drives my decisions and provides me with insights and a variety of choices in regards to my artistic practice and business decisions.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I am inspired by life and its experiences both good and bad, the world around me, my relationships with family, my partner, friends, lovers and adversaries have all ultimately been my greatest and most influential teachers.

I find inspiration comes and goes and when it arrives, life is bliss and I get easily and happily lost in amongst my own creativity, ideas and passion. Inspiration has often snuck up and surprised me when I wasn't even looking for or expecting it.

Often it has come via some of life's most painful experiences and when I have been able to draw from those times creatively my life and my spirit have been enriched by it. It has been my experience that art in which ever form I choose to create or find myself gives depth and meaning to my life. I am inspired by the thoughts of making the world a better place for my having been in it.

Tell me one random fact about you?

I love, love, love Djembe drumming and it will play a big part in my future business ventures.

What's your most favourite work?

My favourite work and play is painting. I feel free, happy and content when I paint. Any stress and worries I may have just fall away. The creative world into which I escape is sometimes the place where I find the most freedom. Painting to me is a form of meditation, mindlessness, a time where I am both connecting and disconnecting from myself. I am happiest in my painting jeans with a paint brush in my hand.  Some of the paintings and designs then find their way to my cards.

What are your dreams for Threads of Conscience in the future?

My dreams for the future of Threads of Conscience is to see it evolve into a business that enables all of my creative and social entrepreneurial business idea's to come to fruition. I am currently working on creating a series of work/playshops for children designed to raise awareness of and for social-emotional and environmental issues in a manner which is age appropriate for kids. Creating a business that is as much about what I am able to give as it is about what I may receive is vital for my future plans. To sustain a profit with purpose that allows me to make a living doing what I love, take care of my beautiful family and to pay it forward and continue to raise awareness for causes and NGO's that make the world worth living for those who need it most.

My dreams are all wrapped up in making the world a better place.
